Bio

Joel Kowalewski, PhD, is a neuroscientist who studies how the nervous system turns chemistry into perception and behavior. He earned his PhD in computational neuroscience at the University of California, Riverside, and his MA in neuroscience at San Diego State University. His research spans human neuroimaging of Alzheimer's disease, molecular neuroscience, and stem cell biology. He translates this work into AI discovery platforms. These pipelines have screened millions of compounds to identify pleasant-smelling insect repellents and candidate therapeutics. His work appears in Neuron, eLife, iScience, Chemical Senses, and Brain Research, and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and Psychology Today. A two-time biotech CTO and patent holder, he teaches artificial intelligence and machine learning at Columbia University, UCLA, and MIT Continuing Education, and mentors students in research design.
