Getting into a university lab can feel like the finish line. It isn’t, it’s the start of a different set of tradeoffs, and the biggest one rarely gets said out loud: most high schoolers who work in a university lab don’t walk away with their own project, and many don’t end up with a publication or named credit either. That’s not a red flag specific to your student’s experience. It’s how these labs are structured. Here’s what’s actually a pro, what’s actually a con, and what’s realistic to expect either way when trying to work with a university professor’s team or their lab.

What do high school students actually do in a research lab?

Day to day, it’s rare to design your own experiment. It’s more often preparing samples, running established protocols, collecting or cleaning data, doing literature reviews, or sitting in on lab meetings to absorb how the group thinks through problems. That can be genuinely valuable, you’re seeing a real research process, not a simulation of one, but it’s supporting work, done inside someone else’s project, not a project of your own.

Will I get my own research project in a university lab?

Usually not, at least not fully. Labs run on an ongoing research agenda that predates you and will continue after you leave. A university lab bringing on a high schooler is rarely about needing extra hands for the lab’s actual output, it’s more often about mentorship and education for its own sake. That’s a real and legitimate reason to take you on, but it also means the work you’re given is usually a small, contained piece of something larger, not a self-directed project with your name on the outcome.

Does this affect science fair eligibility, like ISEF?

Yes, this isn’t just a question of what your student walks away with for college applications, it’s a real eligibility question if they’re aiming for Regeneron ISEF (or an affiliated fair), research publications and research conferences. Society for Science, which runs ISEF, requires that a project reflect independent research by the student, in their own words, and if the student worked in a lab or with a mentor, the official Research Plan has to spell out specifically what the student’s own role was. There’s a dedicated form for this: the supervising adult in the lab has to complete a Regulated Research Institutional Setting form after the work is done, attesting to whether the project was a subset of the lab’s ongoing research and describing how much independence and creativity the student actually showed in shaping the hypothesis, designing the methodology, and analyzing the results. In other words, purely supporting or assistant-level work inside someone else’s project isn’t just a “no publication” outcome, it can be a real eligibility problem, or at least a hard conversation about how the project gets framed for competition. Worth asking a prospective lab directly, before committing time, how much of the actual research design a student would be doing versus executing. 

Do high school students get published working with university labs?

Sometimes, but it’s the exception, not the baseline expectation. In most labs, the project itself belongs to the lab and its Principal Investigator (the “PI”), not to any individual student who contributed to it. If you leave partway through, or if your role was limited to a supporting task, the work typically stays with the lab and gets reassigned or absorbed into someone else’s contribution. Even committed lab members don’t always reach publication, a lot of solid research work ends at an internal presentation or a line in an acknowledgments section, not a byline. This also varies by field: experimental lab sciences tend to weigh hands-on data and methods contributions, while computational or math-heavy research more often credits original derivations, code, or analysis, so what counts as a “real contribution” worth crediting isn’t the same everywhere. If authorship matters to your student, it’s worth asking directly, and early, what role, if any, is realistic before assuming it’s part of the deal.

Beyond cold emails: why some labs can’t say yes

Even a responsive university lab sometimes can’t say yes: many university labs face real safety and liability restrictions on bringing a minor into an active research space, independent of how interested the university lab is. That’s not a reflection of your student’s application, it’s an institutional constraint some labs simply can’t work around. Is it worth it without a publication or your own project?

Often, yes, but the value is in a different place than the deliverable. A semester or summer of real lab exposure gives your student something concrete to speak to: what the day-to-day of research actually involves, whether they liked it, and direct contact with people doing the work professionally. On a college application, that kind of grounded, honest experience, even without a paper attached, reads as genuine initiative, not a padded credential. The mistake is going in expecting a publication as the baseline outcome; the mistake isn’t pursuing the lab experience itself.
