Most students who hesitate before starting their research journey aren’t afraid of hard work, they’re afraid of wasting it. Spending months on something only to realise it wasn’t for them, or worse, discovering mid-way through a university degree that the thing they built their plans around doesn’t actually feel the way they imagined it would. That uncertainty is real, and it’s sensible.
Research looks a certain way from the outside, serious, slow, the domain of people who already know what they’re doing, and there’s no obvious low-stakes way to find out if the reality matches the picture in your head. Future Forward Labs’ summer research sprint exists precisely for that gap. Research isn’t something most schools let you try before you’re already inside a degree that depends on it. So students either leap or they don’t, and a lot of genuinely curious people choose don’t, just because the risk felt too high. Let’s change that!
What is the research sprint?
The research sprint is a 6-week, mentor-guided programme for students in grades 6–12 (ages 11–18) who want to find out whether independent research suits them. Students choose their own topic, work one-on-one with a PhD graduate mentor for 60 minutes per session, gather and analyze real evidence, and present findings at week six. No prior research experience is required.
Maybe you’ve thought about research before and immediately felt like it wasn’t for you, that it was too serious or too much. Something for kids who are already winning science fairs or planning to cure diseases by age 20.
That’s not what this is.
By the end of the sprint, you’ll have a real project with real results, and a clear, personal answer to the question: is research for me?
Who is the research sprint for?
The sprint is open to any student in grades 6–12. You do not need to be a straight-A student or have a science background. The students who thrive here share one trait: they are genuinely curious about something and would rather dig into one question deeply than skim ten topics at once.

If three or more of those felt true, you’re a strong fit. And if you’re not sure? That’s exactly what the sprint is for. You’re not committing to a research career — you’re trying it on for six weeks, with a mentor beside you.
What happens during the 6-week research sprint?
Each 1-1 session runs for 60 minutes with a dedicated PhD mentor. The work happens between sessions, nothing that will overwhelm a full schedule.
Finding your research question You and your mentor explore what genuinely interests you and narrow it into one focused, answerable question. Most students arrive with a vague topic and leave with a real hypothesis.
Making a research plan You decide how to answer your question — survey, experiment, data analysis, or literature review. Your mentor helps you choose the right method and explains why it matters.
Gathering evidence You run your survey, collect data, write code, or dig through sources. Your mentor troubleshoots with you in real time — because things rarely go exactly as planned, and that is part of learning research.
Analysing your results You look at what you found — patterns, surprises, dead ends. Your mentor teaches just enough analysis (charts, statistics, logical reasoning) to see what your evidence is actually saying.
Drawing conclusions and writing up You draft a research report and manuscript: what did you find, and why does it matter? Your mentor gives honest feedback and teaches you how to take critique without deflating.
Presenting and reflecting You present your work, field questions, then sit with the real deliverable: did you enjoy this? What surprised you? Where do you want to go next? That answer matters more than the project itself.

What students gain from the research sprint
Whether research becomes your thing or not, six weeks of doing it builds skills that travel into almost every direction you could go:
- Forming a focused question: the foundation of clear thinking in any field
- Finding credible sources: essential for college and beyond
- Analysing evidence: not just collecting information, but understanding what it means
- Explaining findings clearly : in essays, interviews, presentations, and everyday life
Students who complete mentored research projects go on to present at science fairs, publish in youth journals, and write college application essays that are genuinely interesting to read, not because they performed research, but because they discovered something real.
A note for parents
This is not an extracurricular added to pad an application. It is a low-risk, structured way for your child to find out whether they genuinely enjoy independent intellectual work — before committing to a research-heavy college program or career path. It’s also a way for high school seniors to have a research manuscript that’s been developed under the guidance of a mentor.
One session per week. 60 minutes per session. A PhD mentor trained to work with teenagers. Every session has a clear goal. The student owns the direction — they choose the question.
The most common thing parents tell us afterwards: they didn’t realise how much their child had to say about something when they got to choose the something.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be good at school to join? You need to be curious about something and willing to work on it. Your mentor teaches you everything else. Students who struggle most are those not genuinely interested in their question, which is why you pick it yourself.
Isn’t this just extra homework? No. There are no grades, no tests, and no right answer you must reach. It is a project driven by your own curiosity, which feels completely different from schoolwork even when doing similar tasks.
What if I try it and decide research isn’t for me? That is a completely valid outcome and genuinely useful information. Discovering research is not your thing at 15 is far better than finding out at 20 after committing to a research-heavy degree. You will still finish with a real project, transferable skills, and a clearer sense of what you do want to pursue.
How much time does the sprint take each week? One session per week of 60 minutes, plus self study work in between. Designed for students with full schedules — sports, other classes, activities. Mentors are flexible on timing.
Can non-STEM students participate? Future Forward Labs is a STEM specialist mentoring academy; we do not offer non-STEM research programs right now.
My school doesn’t offer research programs — am I behind? Not at all. Most schools do not offer mentored research. That is the gap this programme was designed to fill. Students from all school backgrounds complete the sprint and do excellent work. Your mentor meets you exactly where you are.
