Microbiologist & Immunologist
PhD, Virginia Commonwealth University
Advisory Areas
Bio
Dr. Gavin Chambers is a microbiologist and immunologist specializing in infectious diseases, vaccine development, and diagnostic assay design. He earned his PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University, where his doctoral research focused on the structural and functional role of outer surface protein C (OspC) in Borreliella burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. His work combined molecular biology, immunology, and in vivo infection models to uncover mechanisms of immune evasion and support the development of next-generation vaccines and diagnostics.
From academic research to applied public health, Dr. Chambers has built a diverse background in disease surveillance and translational science. He has worked with multiple vector control districts analyzing multi-year mosquito surveillance datasets to identify West Nile Virus risk patterns and inform public health interventions. He also contributed to vector control efforts in California by conducting field surveillance and supporting the early detection of invasive mosquito species.
In addition to his scientific research, Dr. Chambers is the co-founder of a biotechnology startup focused on emerging public health threats and has experience developing NIH and NSF grant proposals. He is passionate about mentoring students, helping them design strong research projects, communicate their findings effectively, and build the skills needed to succeed in competitive scientific environments.
